A Binghamton man is facing 17 years to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to stabbing a man to death on Washington Street.
The Broome County District Attorney’s Office has announced that Michael W. Brutvan, 37, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on March 17 for the stabbing death of Kevin L. Ray, 57, of Endicott, in May 2025.
Officers responded to a report of a stabbing at about 5:15 p.m. on May 13, 2025, at the Salvation Army located at 131 Washington St. At the scene, they found Ray suffering from stab wounds to his shoulder and neck. EMS provided life-saving measures and transported Ray to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Brutvan had entered the store, which was hosting a community meal, and stabbed the victim several times. Following an investigation, officers reported that the stabbing was not a random act, and the two men were known to one another.
Two days after the stabbing, the Salvation Army location was shut down indefinitely following a meeting between City of Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham and the facility’s owners.
Brutvan’s sentencing has been scheduled for June 22 in Broome County Court.
