The San Francisco 49ers moved on from linebacker Dre Greenlaw last offseason, allowing him to sign a three-year, $35 million deal with the Denver Broncos.
However, after just one season, Denver released Greenlaw on Thursday, and it didn’t take long before NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the linebacker is signing back with San Francisco on a one-year, $7.5 million deal.
Greenlaw, 28, played at Arkansas from 2015-18 before the 49ers took him in the fifth round (No. 148 overall) of the 2019 NFL draft. He spent his first six seasons with San Francisco and one with Denver.
In his seven years in the league, he’s appeared in 72 games and started 63, while recording 498 tackles (20 for a loss), 16 passes defensed, 11 quarterback hits, 4.5 sacks, four interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered.
Greenlaw, who was suspended one game for running at a referee last season, will likely slide in next to Fred Warner again, allowing Dee Winters and Tatum Bethune to be the top backups. This probably makes the linebacker room San Francisco’s deepest position group right now.
