Weekend in Bloomington includes Pi Day at Wonderlab, local book fair

It feels fitting that Pi Day, the March 14 holiday celebrating the endlessly important mathematical constant, comes at this turn of seasons. Pi is a symbol of cycles, a reminder that in a perfect loop, some things never change. Already, it’s springtime, IU students are heading off for spring break, and Bloomington’s idyllic summer season is right around the corner. It’s hardly a sentimental celebration, but Pi Day serves as a quiet reminder to trust the process and look at the big picture.

This weekend in Bloomington, there’s plenty of reasons to circle your calendar. You can celebrate Pi Day with hands-on activities at Wonderlab, skate laps with drag queens at Western Skateland, enjoy a quiet night of knitting in the company of others at Gather, and so much more.

Skate with local drag queens with “Skate and Slay” at Western Skateland

Thursday at Western Skateland, join Bloomington’s beloved DJ Axipitor for an energetic night of dance and music on the rink, accompanied by local drag queens Johnee Crash and Peacock the Phoenix. This 18+ event will feature performances from the two queens, plus ample time for free skating, all soundtracked by Axipitor’s infectious, upbeat live-mixing.

“Skate and Slay” runs from 9 to 11 p.m. at Western Skateland, 930 W. 17th St. Admission is $5 at the door; bring your own skates or rent for an additional $5.

Enjoy a night of crafts and community with Knit Night at Gather

Don’t miss the season’s last installment of “Knit Night,” Gather’s low-stakes, once-a-month meetup for those looking to shake off their winter blues through crafting. No matter your skill or experience level, feel free to drop in, chat, and try your hand at this leisurely craft.

Knit Night is from 6 to 9 p.m. at Gather, 116 N. Walnut St. Attendance is free; bring your own project or purchase materials from the shop.

Celebrate Pi Day with hands-on, all-ages activities at Wonderlab

Saturday is Pi Day, and Wonderlab has a rich slate of all-ages activities planned to celebrate the legendary mathematical constant. From utilizing yarn to measure diameter and circumference to bending light with water, Wonderlab will demonstrate exciting, hands-on ways to visualize pi — and explain why it matters across mathematics, theoretical physics, and more.

Pi Day activities start at 10 a.m. and go until close at 5 p.m. Wonderlab is at 308 W. 4th St. All activities are included with admission, which is $14.50 for non-members and free for members. Purchase tickets online in advance at wonderlab.org/pi-day/.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day early at Hard Truth

Don’t let the awkward mid-week timing of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day stop you from having a good time; you can still enjoy a festive night of music, food, games and more at Hard Truth Distillery’s St. Patrick’s Day party this Saturday. The celebration promises everything you could want in a St. Paddy’s celebration, complete with bagpipe performances, Irish food, and, naturally, plenty of beer.

The party goes from 6 to 10 p.m. at Hard Truth Distillery in Nashville, 418 Old S.R. 46. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online at tinyurl.com/StPatricksHardTruth. 21+.
