You know that smiling kangaroo you see at the University of Akron sporting events and around the wider community? Well, her name is Zippy, and there’s much more lore to her story than you might know.
One of the only female mascots in the country, Zippy is bubbly, lovable and sassy in the most respectful way, according to Michelle Banis, UA director of alumni relations and coordinator of the mascot program.
Every year, a new group of students tries out to be the anonymous actor under the suit. You can learn more about what tryouts entail and what it’s like to be the one creating Zippy’s magic in our upcoming story, publishing online the morning of March 11.
