SPRINGFIELD – An arrest was made “for firearms related offenses” in connection to a shooting that left a 31-year-old Springfield man dead on March 6.
The suspect admitted to his involvement, according to a probable cause statement obtained by the SJ-R.
Randy Crockett, 23, of Springfield, was arrested for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and for not possessing a firearm owner’s identification card (FOID), according to a news release from the Springfield Police Department on March 9.
In a March 7 email, Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon did not give the name of the victim, but dozens of people on social media identified him as PK Haynes.
Springfield Police officers were sent to the 1300 block of E. Jackson Street around 8:50 p.m. on March 6 in reference to a Shot Spotter alert of several possible shots fired, according to the news release.
Officers found a man on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound. The man was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
According to the probable cause statement, while other officers were heading to the area, the arresting officer saw an SUV vehicle traveling “at a high rate” on 13th Street away from the scene, committing several traffic violations.
The officer pulled the vehicle over and identified the driver as Crockett.
“Randy admitted to his involvement in the shooting at [redacted]. He stated he threw the revolver out the window of his car. He described the gun as a silver revolver,” the report read.
Officers traced the path of Crockett’s vehicle, discovering a .357 revolver near the roadway. The revolver had three spent casings and three live rounds inside of the cylinder, according to the report.
Shot Spotter alerted SPD that nine shots were fired.
Crockett was advised of his Miranda Rights, which he “acknowledged and understood” before being interviewed, the report read.
A search warrant was obtained and served. Crockett stated he had extra ammunition for the revolver at his residence, and authorities recovered several live .357 rounds there.
Crockett has a suspended FOID card, according to the report. He is also on pre-trial release for three crimes: a domestic battery, an aggravated assault, and aggravated battery & domestic battery.
The shooting remains under investigation.
