As part of their complete teardown of the roster, new Miami Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley announced on Monday that they’re releasing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after the start of the new league year.
However, Tagovailoa isn’t expected to be on the market for long, as NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Atlanta Falcons are “making a strong push” to sign the quarterback. They technically can’t be made until Tagovailoa is officially released, but Atlanta is trying to agree to a framework.
Tagovailoa, 28, spent the last six seasons with the Dolphins and led them to a 44-32 record in his 76 starts while completing 68% of his passes for 18,166 yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions.
Atlanta makes sense for Tagovailoa, as Michael Penix, who has been the Falcons’ starter, is a lefty, so they don’t have to change anything when either quarterback is running the offense this offseason.
