Popular downtown Sarasota restaurant to reopen at new location

A downtown Sarasota restaurant is being revived — albeit in a new location, with more of a fast casual concept — by a team including those who recently announced plans to bring back another longtime local favorite.

El Greco Kitchen & Market, located at 4035 Clark Road in the former Mochinut space in the Expo on Clark plaza at the intersection of Clark and Sawyer roads, plans to open this spring, according to a press release. The restaurant will be a fast casual version of El Greco Cafe, which operated in downtown Sarasota at 1592 Main St. in the space now occupied by 1592 Wood Fired Kitchen and Cocktails.

Who will operate the new El Greco in Sarasota?

The new El Greco will be a venture between Patti Soublis Corcoran, daughter of the original owners George and Paulene Soublis, and her nephew Dimitri Syros of The Breakfast Company, which has locations currently open in Sarasota’s The Landings and Rosemary District, Bradenton’s Twelve Oaks Plaza, and University Town Center. Syros and the team behind The Breakfast Company is also partnering with Syros’ stepfather Troy King to reopen Sarasota’s Hob Nob Drive-In, which operated for 67 years before closing in 2024.

“Many of us miss watching my father come out of the kitchen at El Greco, wiping his hands on his apron and greeting you as ‘My friend!'” Corcoran said in a statement shared to social media. “For nearly two decades, friends and neighbors shared meals with us there and became part of our family. Since selling El Greco in 2007, we’ve heard from countless friends and neighbors asking us to bring it back. Today I am happy to say that the wait is over.”

What kind of food does El Greco serve?

El Greco’s menu will feature staple Greek dishes such as gyro platters, souvlaki, Greek salad and avgolemono soup, according to the press release. The menu will be also be designed around quick service offerings focused on pitas, bowls, platters and salads, leaning into the healthy and convenient benefits of the high-protein Mediterranean diet.

Corcoran plans to build on the work of her parents, using her father’s original recipes while also introducing some modern menu twists, according to the press release. The new El Greco will also have a market element, featuring imported Greek ingredients for retail purchase.
