Suspect in custody after Port Jervis man fatally shot

PORT JERVIS – A 43-year-old Port Jervis man was shot to death just after 12:30 a.m. Feb. 15 on Hammond Street in the city.

Port Jervis city police said they took a suspect into custody at approximately 7:35 p.m. Feb. 15. He has been identified as David Rombousek, 26, of Port Jervis.

Police said officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the vicinity of 145-147 Hammond Street.

When they arrived, they found a 43-year-old man who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body during a disturbance.

The victim, who has not been identified by police, was taken to Bon Secours Community Hospital on Main Street for emergency treatment, but he later died from his injuries.

Rombousek was taken into custody without incident on Ball Street. Police have not yet said what specific charges he is facing. Police said they will provide more details in a press release “as soon as it is safely available.”

Members of the state police assisted Port Jervis police on Hammond Street.

The case is being investigated jointly by Port Jervis city police, state police and the Orange County District Attorney’s office, with assistance from the special operations group of the Orange County Sheriff’s office, the FBI Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force and the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center.

The name of Rombousek’s attorney was not immediately available. No motive for the shooting has been announced by police.
