A fire destroyed a residence in the village of Arkport on Feb. 3.
There were no serious injuries, according to emergency officials.
The Arkport Hose Co. 1 was dispatched at about 9:15 p.m. for the fully-involved structure fire at residential trailer at 4 Hidden Lane.
Arkport fire officials said one person lived at the house, and he was not injured in the fire.
Arkport Fire Chief Dwight Smith said the Red Cross is assisting the resident with temporary housing.
Smith said a neighbor at the house next door was taken to a local hospital as a precaution for possible smoke inhalation.
Arkport firefighters said flames were visible from the fire department parking lot, which immediately triggered a call to the Canaseraga Volunteer Fire Department for mutual aid.
A North Hornell Volunteer Fire Department engine was requested to hit the water hydrant across the street before entering the village park, while the City of Hornell Fire Department brought an ambulance to the scene, the Arkport Hose said.
Smith called the structure is a total loss. He said a motor vehicle parked nearby sustained minor heat damage.
Steuben County Emergency Services is investigating the cause, but preliminary indications are that it began accidentally, a fire official said.
Smith said he is thankful that no one was seriously injured. He praised firefighters, who endured bitter cold while battling the blaze well into the early morning hours of Wednesday
“I thought the departments did a good job. It was burning pretty well when we got there,” Smith said.
Smith thanked the Arkport Department of Public Works for putting down salt after the call.
New York State Police, NYSEG and National Fuel Gas also came to the scene.
