Route 19 road work beginning May 26 in Allegany County, expect delays

The New York state Department of Transportation is beginning a road pavement project Tuesday, May 26, on a nearly nine-mile stretch of state Route 19 between the Falls Bridge in Belmont and the Wellsville Country Club.

DOT said vehicle movement will be reduced to a single lane with alternating traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily during the length of the project.

Officials said the work will involve one section of the roadway at a time. The project will begin at the Belmont end of the route, DOT told the Evening Tribune.

Traffic will be controlled by flagging personnel. DOT said motorists should anticipate travel delays during this time and are advised to seek alternate routes if necessary.

Construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change based on conditions.

The work is anticipated to be completed by mid-June, DOT said.

Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.

At least three public school districts’ transportation departments − Wellsville, Scio and Genesee Valley − are expected to be impacted by the paving work.

Access Allegany Transit reacts to Route 19 work

As a result of the paving, Access Allegany Transit said its buses will run late and transfers may be missed. The service said buses will not be able to stop for flag stops along the route during the project.

The service advised riders to be at designated stops along the route, including the VA Medical Center, the Scio Store, the Scio Library, ACCORD and the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.
