The southern part of the bay of Green Bay is closing to commercial vessel traffic starting at noon Feb. 1, the U.S. Coast Guard announced in a Jan. 30 news release.
The closure is for all waters of the bay southwest of a line extending west from Sherwood Point Lighthouse in Sturgeon Bay to Peshtigo Reef Lighthouse off the shore of Marinette County. It is to remain in effect while ice is present during this winter season.
The news release said closing that section of Green Bay to commercial traffic minimizes risks to those participating in ice fishing and other winter recreational activities on the ice of the bay.
The closure comes about a week after the Coast Guard asked those using the ice on the bays of Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay for recreation to be especially aware as the service’s ice breaking operations continue around Door County in Lake Michigan and the rest of Green Bay.
