The parameters for Adelanto yard sales have recently slackened in an effort by the city council to help beautify the city.
Previously, Adelanto residents were only allowed yard sales twice a year during a three-day weekend period. Now, the city council has adopted a resolution to allow its residents access to yard sales twice a month.
However, instead of a $1 permit, the proper yard sale papers will now run residents $10.
During the Jan. 14 council meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Daniel Ramos said he hopes access to more yard sales curbs the need to illegally dump in the city.
Some residents, like Magda Torrellis, say the fee is too steep for residents trying to make extra bucks to pay the bills. Others didn’t even know a permit is required for garage and yard sales.
Standing yard sale conditions in Adelanto
According to the yard sale permit application, the Adelanto Business License Division processes yard sale permits.
When the Daily Press called to inquire about the permit process, city staff reported the last processed yard sale permit was in 2018, and were unsure whether the department still handled permit applications.
Other requirements, such as signage and penalties, are clearer on the Adelanto website. A sign no larger than four square feet in area may be displayed on the premises announcing the yard sale. Additionally, no signs can be displayed at any location off the premises.
Yard sales are also limited to only garage, porch and patio areas.
Yard sale items and signs not taken down after the three consecutive-day permit period are subject to penalties. According to Adelanto city code 5.08.060, violations of the permit can result in a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
The city council has not specified whether this penalty fee will also increase in accordance with the permit fee influx.
