MANITOWOC – You’ve packed up the Christmas ornaments and wound up the lights, and now are ready to dispose of your holiday tree. But what to do with it?
The city of Manitowoc is offering its eighth annual Christmas tree exchange program. This program gives residents the chance to exchange a fresh-cut Christmas tree for a potted, young tree seedling known as a “whip.” Whips are ready for planting, and the program was started to help the city regain some of its tree canopy lost as a result of the emerald ash borer infestation.
Throughout the month of January, Manitowoc residents can take their fresh-cut tree to the Manitowoc County Recycling Center, 3000 Basswood Road. Trees should be free of stands, decorations, bags, tinsel, lights, etc.
If the tree is taller than 6 feet, it should be cut in half. Participants need to complete and sign a form at the main office before dropping off a tree. Office hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
Vouchers for a whip will be mailed to qualified residents in March. Trees will be available for pickup from April 24 through May 22. A total of 75 vouchers will be issued.
During the month of January, Pozorski Hauling and Recycling LLC sponsores a free, one-day pickup of natural Christmas trees in the city of Manitowoc. For information, call Pozorski Hauling at 920-682-3544.
All Manitowoc County residents and businesses, including those in Two Rivers, may drop off their natural holiday trees at the Basswood Compost Site from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Again, all ornaments, tinsel, etc., should be removed and trees taller than 6 feet should be cut in half.
