Upstate New York rang in the new year under a blanket of snow as a back-to-back winter storms left roads slick and some of the heaviest snowfall in decades across the region.
The week’s snow began with a bomb cyclone that swept through the Northeast, bringing blizzard conditions and heavy winds across the Great Lakes. Lake Erie and Lake Ontario reported waves rivaling historic storms, while communities downwind of the lakes were buried under feet of snow.
On Wednesday, Dec. 30, the National Weather Service recorded 24.2 inches at the Syracuse airport. Western and central New York also saw significant snowfall, though generally lighter than the peak in Syracuse.
As the main storm moved out Thursday, Dec. 31, an Alberta clipper reinforced lingering Arctic air, keeping temperatures bitterly cold and generating additional lake-effect snow across the region, producing snow squalls into New Year’s Day.
