A San Angelo man has been sentenced to life in prison following a jury trial related to a 2022 shooting and standoff incident, according to a news release from police.
Luis Alberto Herrera, 41, was being held Monday in the Tom Green County Jail, pending his transfer to prison, online jail records show.
A Tom Green County Grand jury indicted the man for seven felonies, which included shooting a woman in the back, firing at police and child sexual assault, according to court documents released April 12, 2022.
Around 8:05 p.m. Jan. 16, 2022, police arrived to a reported shooting on North Pope Street, according to court records. They found a woman on the floor of a residence with a gunshot wound through her back. As she was transported to the hospital, she named a man as the shooter.
Around the same date, an indictment stated the man fired at four police officers while they attempted to detain him. During the incident, Herrera fired an assault rifle at members of the responding San Angelo Police Department SWAT team before being safely taken into custody.
The investigation also revealed two reported child sexual assaults from August and September 2020, court records show. These assault cases are still pending as of Monday.
Herrera was arrested Jan. 17, 2022, on suspicion of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and 15 warrants.
He was convicted after a jury trial on Dec. 18 of multiple felonies stemming from events that occurred in January 2022.
Herrera was charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury and four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer, according to police.
Herrera was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to life in prison on each of the five counts, police stated.
“The San Angelo Police Department recognizes the dedication and professionalism of the responding officers, the San Angelo SWAT Team, and the Criminal Investigation Division for their extensive investigative work, and thanks the TomGreen County District Attorney’s Office for their continued partnership and efforts in prosecuting this case,” the release stated.
