Michigan football recruits quiet after Sherrone Moore firing

Michigan football signees have been mostly quiet amid a scandal that has rocked the football world after the university fired coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

After the university released a statement Wednesday saying Moore was fired after an investigation found credible evidence that he was engaging “in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” the college football ecosystem was sent into a whirlwind, with Michigan among the last teams looking for a new coach.

The move to fire Moore, who went 17-8 in his two seasons as U-M’s full-time coach, comes after the early signing period opened and closed last week.

Here’s what some signees in the class of 2026, or people close to them, are saying on social media:

Markel Dabney, a three-star athlete from Huguenot High School in Richmond, Virginia, who pledged to join the Wolverines back in June and signed last week, threw his support behind Biff Poggi, Michigan’s interim head coach via a post on X.

Poggi served as the team’s coach for two games, in Weeks 3 and 4 of the 2025 season, which Michigan won. He has an 8-16 record as a college coach, going 3-9 in his first year at Charlotte in 2023 and 3-7 before he was fired in his second year, with two games left in the 2024 season.

Adrian Hamilton, a three-star offensive line signee, from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, also reposted the the post on X.

Additionally, Tiffany Johnson, mother of Travis Johnson – a four-star wide receiver from Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, who signed with U-M over Georgia, Indiana and Penn State – responded to a reporter who said West Virginia should target Johnson if he enters the transfer portal amid the coaching change.

Michigan, according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings, is the No. 11 ranked class in college football.
