Steven Jackson was not a player you wanted to mess with on the field. If Kyle Brandt’s “Angry Runs” segment on “Good Morning Football” was around during Jackson’s prime, he’d have won it every week.
A player who ran that angrily was unsurprisingly fiery off the field, too.
Former Rams wide receiver Mardy Gilyard shared a story of the time Jackson lost his cool at halftime of a 2010 game and knocked out one of his teammates in the locker room during an altercation. The teammate? Starting center Jason Brown.
Here’s the story from the “Raw Room” podcast.
“It’s halftime, Jack come in that (expletive), throw his helmet, talking to the O-line coach and saying, ‘You need to get these (expletive) together. “He said, ‘I don’t need to do a (expletive) thing,’” Gilyard recalled.
That’s when Jackson lost his temper on the coach and blew up.
“Jack said, ‘Who the (expletive) you talking to?’ The look he gave him, bro,” he continued. “… Jack was trying to get through the little alleyway to him until JB stands up. Jason Brown, our center, and puts his hand – I don’t know why – that (expletive) put his hand on Steven Jackson’s chest and said, ‘Chill, bro.’”
Jackson didn’t appreciate that, of course.
“Basically, the starting offensive line is standing up kind of like behind him. Jack stole this bro and knocked (Jason) clean out. I’m just standing there like – just think about your starting center falling into the back of these (expletive) like the Temptations. Everybody caught him.”
Even after knocking out Brown, Jackson was still trying to get to the offensive line coach.
“And the coach is still right there and Jack is still trying to get to this (expletive). I’ve never felt this tiny in my life. I’m grabbing bro … I turned into baby brother so fast. ‘Big bro, come on bro. Don’t do it big bro. It’s not worth it.’
“Jason’s eyes rolled like this, bro. On contact, on the hit, his (expletive) started rolling – he fell into the rest of the offensive line, like, arms out.”
Jackson was one of the toughest players in the NFL, someone no defender wanted to tackle. He as probably frustrated by the Rams’ lack of success as a team, too, never finishing with a winning record in St. Louis.
That year, the Rams went 7-9 under Steve Spagnuolo, who was fired after the 2011 season and replaced by Jeff Fisher.
