City of Akron says mailers about sewer and water line insurance are legit

Those letters Akron residents have been receiving advertising water and sewer line insurance are no scam, the city said.

In a continuation of an eight-year partnership, the city of Akron and Service Line Warranties of America are offering insurance coverage for water lines at $3.75 per month and $4.57 per month for sewer, a discounted price for Akron customers. The voluntary, optional program covers damage to pipes on residents’ property, which aren’t covered by the city or through homeowner’s insurance.

“Far too many homeowners are unaware that they are responsible for any repairs needed to water/sewer lines on the exterior of their property,” said city Service Director Chris Ludle. “This means that homeowners can be stuck with the hassle and expense of the repair — from identifying a good contractor and scheduling time for the repair to be done to finding extra money in the budget to cover the cost of the repair. This program can offer residents peace of mind so if a break occurs, they know they are covered.”

The city explained how repairs work in a Nov. 17 news release.

“If a program customer’s service line needs to be repaired, a simple call to the SLWA 24-hour hotline will dispatch a local, licensed and insured contractor familiar with local code,” said the city. “There are no service fees or deductibles, and the repair is guaranteed for one year.”

SLWA has waived the 30-day wait period for this offer so coverage can begin immediately upon joining the program. Service calls are covered for up to $8,500 per call for covered water service and sewer line repairs. This protection covers all types of pipe material regardless of how old the line is.
