The Chicago Bears defense leads the NFL in takeaways, forcing 21 turnovers on their opponents this season, and they’re getting standout performances from multiple players.
In their Week 11 win over the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago intercepted quarterback J.J. McCarthy twice, once by safety Kevin Byard, and the other by Nahshon Wright, who has two interceptions against Minnesota this year.
With interceptions by Byard and Wright, the two players now sit atop the league leaders in picks for the season, and they’re not alone. Chicago now has three of their defensive players sitting atop the league lead for interceptions, giving three players a combined 13 picks through Week 11.
Byard leads the NFL with five interceptions with Wright and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds tying for second, along with Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd, with four picks.
As part of the coaching staff overhaul this offseason, the Bears brought in respected defensive coordinator Dennis Allen to lead the defense, but the underrated hire may have been defensive backs coach Al Harris. After finding plenty of success across the league, Harris has made quite the impact in his first season with Chicago, especially with Wright, who has been called upon to step up due to several injuries in the secondary for the Bears.
