Eric Lawrence’s article should sound an alarm for community members who care about their neighbors who depend on this bus stop for carrying out daily activities. (“Taylor’s Southland Center orders SMART bus stop removed, sparking accessibility concerns,” Nov. 11.) Shopping centers are natural places for bus stops, and the Southland one has serviced bus riders since 1982.
There has to be a solution to problems mentioned in the article. Mall management owes it to the many regular riders of the SMART bus, as well as any potential riders, to work with SMART to find a suitable remedy that results in keeping the Southland bus stop open and available to our neighbors who need it. It’s the right thing to do.

With no more pennies, gas stations need to stop it
With the minting of pennies ending, it makes it even more absurd that gas stations post their prices in tenths of a cent. Just because we are used to seeing this doesn’t make it any less a deceptive practice.

Will legislators steps up after terror plot against Ferndale?
The recent reports of the terrorist plot against Ferndale have been gripping because of fine reporting, but are bone-chilling for me because I live close to Ferndale, and every day when I worked Downriver, I drove past the gun shop shown on the front page.
It’s not just the proximity: We are now in a situation where violence, murder and threat are in the news every day — the National Guard on city streets, boats blown up in international waters and threats to re-start the nuclear arms race — issues of local, national and global significance.
Since peace does begin at home, a good starting point would be a strong push to eliminate easy access to the assault weapons described in the articles; then we are not solely dependent on the FBI overhearing a conversation. Will our legislators step up?
