Mike Kafka returns accountability to New York Giants with benching of Abdul Carter

The New York Giants entered their Week 11 matchup against the Green Bay Packers amid a four-game losing streak, prompting significant adjustments, including a midseason change at head coach.

During the Giants’ initial defensive series, rookie edge rusher Abdul Carter was conspicuously absent from the field — a move orchestrated by interim head coach Mike Kafka. Following the defeat, which extended New York’s skid to five consecutive losses, Kafka fielded questions about the decision.

“That was the coach’s decision. It’s something we talked about. I want to make sure it was my decision. So, we’ll just keep the rest of that in-house,” Kafka said. “Yeah, we’ll keep the rest of that in-house. Just it was a coach’s decision for me and talked to Abdul.”

Pressed further on Carter, Kafka offered measured praise for the Giants’ top draft pick.

“Yeah, he played his butt off. He practiced his tail off, played his butt off. I’m really happy about Abdul and excited to watch him continue to grow and continue to play a lot more as a pro,” he said. “I love Abdul and what he brings to this team, the skill set he has. This guy loves ball. I’m excited again to watch him attack this week of practice and continue to work and grow and be the great player that I think he is.”

A Carter provided marginally more insight into his benching during his own remarks but remained guarded on specifics.

In recent games, the third overall pick from this year’s draft has shown diminished impact. While Carter generated consistent quarterback pressure earlier in the season, his sack production has fallen short of expectations, leaving observers wanting more from the highly anticipated prospect.

Beyond Carter’s demotion, Kafka addressed the choice to insert cornerback Nic Jones into the slot role, displacing Dru Phillips.

“Yeah, the defense, they wanted to make a substitution there to put him at nickel. It was a good idea, and I think he did a nice job and made a nice little play there on third and two,” he said.

Although Phillips has flashed potential with standout plays this season, his overall statistics rank among the league’s worst at cornerback, particularly in yards allowed per coverage snap.

With these in-game adjustments, Kafka appears to be instilling a culture of accountability as interim head coach. Observers can anticipate further modifications as the Giants navigate their remaining six games under his leadership.
