Hot Take Tuesday: Students sound off on snacks, concerts and walking to class

Each week, “Hot Take Tuesday” spotlights bold opinions from the FSView Views section writers on the fun quirks and annoying aspects of life at FSU that many students encounter around campus or throughout their college experience.

Denise Perez: Plane etiquette

I do not know what it is about airports that makes people abandon all sense of decency and set aside the social contract that keeps society from crumbling. If you are near the back of the plane and you get up immediately as we reach the gate, who do you think you are? I doubt even the President of the United States has the sense of urgency that seems to overcome those in the back row of a Boeing 747.

If the President is not mowing down civilians to exit the plane and get to Camp David, there is no reason you should be doing so to reach your overpriced Uber ride that’s almost certainly at the wrong arrival door. Sit down. You’re not moving and neither are the 80 people in front of you. If you wanted to be first out, you should’ve paid to be first in.

Mark Butler: A snack request for FSU

I love Takis. They are a delicious red 40 and a sodium bomb. Maybe it’s the chili powder that’s dumped onto the crunchy base. The snap in my teeth is so satisfying. Or maybe it’s the slight spice it produces. Whatever the reason is, the Trading Post in the FSU Oglesby Union should carry them. So many of my classes are near the Union and it would be convenient to purchase them there.

Alaina Babb: Put the phone down, the stage is right there

Why attend a concert if you’re going to watch it through your phone? As someone who frequently attends events with live music, I never understood why concert-goers often spend the entire concert recording or taking photographs.

Taking a video during your favorite song, or a cool picture here and there for memories, is understandable — but not every second of the concert needs to be documented. As a society, we all need to make an effort to be in the moment without feeling the need to prove every cool thing we do. So please don’t feel the need to record an entire concert — and please, I beg, don’t post the whole concert on your Instagram story.

Ava Werner: You need to be bad at something

Hot girls try things that they’re bad at. I really hate being bad at things, but this week I put that aside and I had the best time. I played a game of basketball for the first time since elementary school and went to a jazz dance workshop open to all FSU students.

I was pretty bad at both, but I learned a lot quickly and it was so fun! So this week I’m advocating for doing more things we’re bad at. You never know what you’ll learn from trying things you’re bad at.

Dylan Rivas: Just walk to class

I think anyone who can should be walking everywhere on and near campus.  It’s commonly agreed that our largest problem is insufficient parking to the point where people routinely lurk in the garages like sharks and fight each other over the one spot that comes open.

If you live a reasonable walk from campus, there’s no reason to drive unless you have something to get to right after your class or meeting. Too many days have been spent parking, with the lack of open spaces making my commute longer than if I had just walked.

We should be saving the nonessential spots mainly for those with overnight passes and commuters from ten minutes away. I understand the convenience and don’t have the disdain a lot of people do for the scooter crowd, but I  think there’s health and social benefit to simply walking if you’re not in a rush.
