If current trends continue, New Mexico is expected to surpass $2 billion in cannabis sales by the end of the year.
Numbers from the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department’s (NMRLD) Cannabis Reporting Online Portal show the state has collected more than $1.93 billion in cannabis revenue through September 2025 — with monthly revenue coming in at around $40 million, cannabis sales are likely to top $2 billion before December.
“We continue to be encouraged by the business growth and success many businesses in the state have seen,” NMRLD Communications Director Andrea Brown said in an email. “The revenue generated by the regulated cannabis industry is not only beneficial for business owners but helps many small towns across New Mexico make meaningful changes to their communities through the use of the excise tax revenue.”
And, as has been the case since recreational marijuana sales became legal in April 2022, Sunland Park along the Texas-New Mexico border continues to be among the state’s top revenue generators, nabbing more than $14 million in medical and recreational sales between June and August.
“The data shows that licensees in border communities like Sunland Park and Chaparral reported consistent sales during the summer months with Sunland Park continuing to top the list of border cities in terms of sales,” Brown said. “Licensees in Santa Teresa reported a slight uptick in sales in August.”
Summer’s top cannabis sales
The following is a breakdown of the top three cities for cannabis sales between June and August:
June
July
August
Texas-New Mexico border towns
While most did not reach the top spots for summer cannabis sales, towns near the Texas-New Mexico border still saw strong sales
Chaparral, a town of roughly 17,000 located along the Texas-New Mexico border, continues to experience growing revenue. The city collected more than $219,300 throughout the summer.
Santa Teresa faired even better, picking up more than $325,400 during the summer months.
Ruidoso, however, put up the highest number of cannabis sales between June and August, collecting roughly $2.2 million in revenue.
How will fall, winter impact cannabis sales?
While the summer months provided a huge boost in cannabis revenue for New Mexico — more than $142 million statewide — Brown anticipates that the colder months will follow suit.
Between October and December 2024, the state collected around $143 million in cannabis revenues.
“The (Cannabis Control Division) does not make market forecasts or projections regarding future sales,” Brown said. “However, historical sales data indicate that fall and winter months generally follow consistent seasonal patterns. Cannabis, as with many consumer-driven markets in New Mexico, often experiences slight increases associated with holiday travel and tourism.”
