Iowa and Indiana played a classic game at Kinnick Stadium, but the biggest story coming out of the afternoon for Iowa’s season is the condition of graduate quarterback Mark Gronowski.
Gronowski took off on a third-down scramble with the game tied at 10 early in the fourth quarter, and he made a move to evade an Indiana defender. However, Gronowski went down gingerly and had to be helped off the field, limping with the assistance of athletic trainers.
Iowa kicker Drew Stevens subsequently hit a 54-yard field goal to give the Hawkeyes a 13-10 lead, but Indiana rallied to capture a 20-15 victory over the Hawkeyes.
Gronowski was later seen with a brace on his left leg. After Gronowski exited the medical tent, the 6-foot-2 quarterback was warming on the sideline and appeared primed to return for the Hawkeyes, but backup quarterback Hank Brown entered the contest for Iowa on its next offensive series.
Gronowski departed having completed 19-of-25 passes for 144 yards with an interception against Indiana. Coach Kirk Ferentz updated the media on Gronowski’s condition after the game.
“He came out of the tent, you all saw that. Just didn’t feel like he could decelerate, that was the issue. Some positive feedback, but we’ll do some testing tomorrow and see where it’s at.”
Hopefully for Iowa, it’s nothing serious or long term for Gronowski. This injury update carries a lot of weight for Iowa’s hopes and dreams this season.
