OHSAA football scores | Northwest vs. Lake recap, highlights

LAKE TWP. — The Lake High School football team hosted Northwest in a clash of perennial OHSAA high school football playoff teams.

The Blue Streaks kept their record perfect, but it wasn’t easy. Lake rallied to win 13-10 to improve to 6-0. Northwest drops to 3-2.

Wrap up

Zach Novak scored both touchdowns for Lake. Novak caught two passes for 80 yards and a score and ran six times for 50 yards and a touchdown. Lake quarterback Alex Quior was 8-of-15 passing for 137 yards and a touchdown. Quior also ran for 78 yards on 12 carries. Davis Matson was the leading rusher for Lake with 81 yards on 23 carries.

Joey Medure scored the lone touchdown for Northwest. Medure ran for 23 yards on three carries. Conner Stephenson had 14 carries for 91 yards for Northwest. Ty Lipkins caught four passes for 100 yards for Northwest.

It is officially final. Lake 13, Northwest 10.

Chase Fuller intercepts Northwest

Chase Fuller intercepts Northwest and returns it to the Northwest 25. Northwest can’t stop the clock. Lake is taking knees and will win 13-10.

Holding call wipes out first down play by Northwest

1:27 to play. Lake leads 13-10. I think I’ve seen more penalties called in this game tonight than I have in every other game I’ve covered combined this year.

Northwest takes over at own 15-yard line

Lake leads 13-10 with 1:34 left. It comes down to this drive.

Lake calls timeout

The Northwest defense forces a punt with 1:41 remaining. Lake will punt from the Northwest 34. Lake leads 13-10. A sideline warning on Lake gave Northwest an extra stoppage of the clock on that drive.

Holding call wipes out Lake touchdown

A 26-yard touchdown run by Lake’s Davis Matson was called back on a holding penalty. Lake has it second-and-21 with 2:43 left at the Northwest 37-yard line. Lake leads 13-10.

Lake converts big third-down play

Lake converts a third-and-six play. Lake is down to the Northwest 28 with 3 minutes to play. Northwest has just one timeout left. Lake leads 13-10.

Lake forces turnover on downs

Northwest is stopped on a fourth-and-2 from their own 39-yard line. Lake takes over with a 13-10 lead and 3:39 to play. Northwest has all three timeouts to stop the clock.

Zach Novak gives Lake the lead

Zach Novak runs for a 25-yard touchdown. Novak does a dive and a roll into the end zone to punctuate it. That was a great run. Novak is incredibly elusive. The extra point is no good for Lake. Big turn of events. Lake leads 13-10 with 5:41 to play. A field goal now ties it for Northwest.

Penalty extends drive for Lake

Northwest is called for pass interference on a fourth-and-8 from the Northwest 43-yard line. That extends the drive for Lake. Controversial call. I personally don’t love it. It was comeback route and the receiver and defensive back both dove for the ball. Pass was underthrown. Northwest leads 10-7 with 6:12 left.

Zach Novak picks up first down for Lake

Novak picks up five yards on the option pitch to keep the chains moving for Lake. Northwest leads 10-7 with 6:44 to play. Lake is down to the Northwest 43.

Big play looms for Lake

Lake has it fourth-and-2 at the Northwest 48-yard line with 7:32 to play. Blue Streaks are going for it.

Lake avoids disaster

The Lake defense forced a punt but the Blue Streak special teams unit fumbled the punt. Lake recovers but it costs them about 25-yards. Lake has it first-and-10 at its own 13-yard line. Northwest leads 10-7 with 10 minutes to play.

Northwest leads Lake after three quarters

Northwest holds a 10-7 lead over Lake going to the fourth quarter. Northwest has it third-and-2 at its own 28-yard line to start the fourth quarter.

Lake misses field goal

Lake drove down the field but missed a 31-yard field goal. Inopportune penalties on both teams on that drive. The Northwest defense had an offsides and a late hit out of bounds. Lake had a holding call and a false start in the final sequence. Northwest leads 10-7 with 41 seconds left in the third quarter.

Ben Schanz gives Northwest the lead

Ben Schanz hits a 35-yard field goal with 6:22 left in the third quarter to give Northwest a 10-7 lead. Long drive to start the second half by Northwest. Key play on the drive was a 15-yard horse collar penalty on Lake. The Blue Streaks had seemingly sacked Northwest on a fourth-and-12 at the Lake 29-yard line to end the drive but the penalty extended the drive.

Second half set to begin at Lake

Northwest and Lake are tied 7-7. Northwest will get the ball first tBeno start the third quarter. Some key halftime stats for Lake. Alex Quior had 110 yards passing and 42 yards rushing. Zach Novak caught two passes for 80 yards and a touchdown for the Blue Streaks. Brayden Venables has 157 yards passing for Northwest with no touchdowns or interceptions. Joey Medure has three carries for 29 yards and a touchdown for Northwest.

Northwest misses long field goal attempt before half

A long field goal attempt by Northwest was wide with under a second to go in the half. It is Lake 7, Northwet 7 at the break. AJ Mitchell had a huge sack for Lake that helped the Blue Streaks escape unscathed. Northwest will get the ball first to start the second half. Both teams are playing excellent defense tonight.

Northwest calls timeout

Northwest has it third-and-2 at the Lake 31-yard line with 30.7 seconds left in the second quarter. Conner Stephenson had a 30-yard run to help set this opportunity up for Northwest. This game is tied 7-7. Northwest will get the ball first to start the third quarter.

Zach Novak ties game for Lake

Zach Novak hauls in a 70-yard touchdown from Alex Quior for Lake with 3:50 left in the second quarter. The extra point is good. Novak evaded several Northwest tacklers that seemingly had him dead to rights a couple of times. Nifty moves by Novak. Lake 7, Northwest 7.

Northwest drive stalls

Northwest makes it just into Lake territory before its drive stalls. Northwest seemingly converted a first down near the Lake 30 but a holding call voided the play. That seems to be a big point of emphasis for this officiating crew. Both teams have had big holding calls. Offenses will have to adjust. Northwest leads 7-0 with 4:32 left in the second quarter.

Northwest forces Lake punt

Lake drives down to the Northwest 37-yard line before the drive stalls out. The punt sails into the end zone for a Northwest touchback. Northwest will take over from its own 20-yard line with a 7-0 lead and 6:44 left in the second quarter.

Joey Medure gives Northwest lead

Joey Medure runs for a 15-yard touchdown to give Northwest the lead at Lake. The extra point kick by Ben Schanz was good. Northwest 7, Lake 0 with 10:41 left in the second quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 66-yard catch by Ty Lipkins on the previous play.

No score after one quarter at Lake

It is Northwest 0, Lake 0 after one quarter. Northwest will have it second-and-8 at its own 16-yard line to start the second quarter.

Northwest defense forces turnover on downs

The Northwest defense just came up with a massive stop on a fourth-and-2 play from its own 14-yard line. Northwest will take over from that spot. No score with 35.7 seconds left in the first quarter.

Angelo Wood sack forces Northwest punt

Angelo Wood just got a clean run at Brayden Venables and had a massive sack for Lake. That’s a quick three-and-out for Northwest. Northwest has a good punt and Lake will take over at its own 30-yard line. No score with 2:59 left in the first quarter. Both of these teams are playing great defense.

Northwest defense holds

One good three-and-out deserves another. Northwest forces a punt. Lake was hurt by a holding call and a false start penalty on that drive. The short punt takes a friendly roll and Northwest will take over at its own 32-yard line. Good job by Northwest of flipping the field position. No score with 4:03 left in the first quarter at Lake.

The penalty on Northwest kills that drive and Lake gets off the field. The Blue Streaks call for a fair catch at their own 47-yard line. Good field position for Lake. No score with 5:22 left in the first quarter.

Northwest forced to take early timeout

Northwest had trouble getting the play in and was forced to take its first timeout with 6:12 left in the first quarter. Northwest had a holding call on its last play and will have it second-and-20 at its own 10-yard line. No score in the first quarter.

Northwest defense forces punt on opening drive

Lake drove past midfield but a third-down sack by Conner Stephenson force the punt. The Blue Streak punt rolls into the end zone so Northwest takes over at its own 20-yard line. It is 0-0 with 6:57 left in the first quarter.

Lake set to receive opening kickoff

Northwest won the coin toss tonight and deferred to the second half. Lake will receive to start the night. The teams are lining up now.

Homecoming night at Lake

I’m in place at Lake tonight. It’s homecoming night and the Blue Streaks are honoring seniors before the game.
