Dunlap football player Jayden Schmick was voted the Journal Star high school boys athlete of the week for Sept. 7-13.
Schmick’s game-tying TD helped give Dunlap a key Mid-Illini Conference victory on Friday. The 5-foot-6, 185-pound junior running back scored the final of his three TDs in overtime, ultimately giving Dunlap a 28-27 win over Pekin.
The poll closed at noon Friday. Information about the nominees is below. If you have a nominee for the honor, email us at sports@pjstar.com or tag us on Twitter @pjstarsports. Last week, Jackson Orris of the Dunlap soccer team was named JS athlete of the week.
Jimmy Lollar, Olympia football
The junior put his name in the Olympia record book on Friday. Lollar, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound running back, scored a school-record six touchdowns and 281 yards rushing as the Spartans beat Pittsfield, 60-20.
Logan Sullivan, Illinois Valley Central soccer
Sullivan tallied a trio of goals last week for the Grey Ghosts, who went 2-1-1 last week. The senior midfielder gave IVC its only goal to knock Illini Bluffs from the unbeaten ranks with a 1-0 win on Thursday. Sullivan scored his other goals in a 6-1 win over Earlville on Monday, while adding another tally in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Serena.
Maxwell Carter, Morton cross country
The junior was the highest Peoria-area Class 2A finisher on Saturday at the First to the Finish Invitational. Carter ran the historic 3-mile Detweiller Park course in 14:58.10, finishing sixth in the 555-runner field. The Potters (193 points) finished second to Peoria Notre Dame (190 points) in the team standings.
Shane Cunningham, Richwoods golf
Cunningham put together a great week on links. The freshman began his week last Monday with a third-place finish at the Limestone Golf Invitational, firing a 4-under 68. He followed that up with a 39 this past Tuesday in beating Morton and IVC at Kellogg Golf Course. Cunningham then wrapped up his week with another third-place finish at the two-day Redbird Classic. He shot a 1-under 71 at Weaver Ridge on Friday, then went to Metamora Fields on Saturday for a 4-over 75.
