Fire in empty hangar at Milwaukee's Timmerman Airport put out quickly

A fire broke out Sept. 10 in an empty airplane hangar at Milwaukee County’s Timmerman Airport.

Around 60 to 75 firefighters responded to the scene, and the fire was put out within an hour, Milwaukee Fire Department Deputy Chief Travis Jones said.

Timmerman Airport is the smaller sister airport to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, used for general aviation. Harold Mester, director of public affairs and marketing for the Milwaukee County airports, specified that Mitchell, Milwaukee’s airport for commercial flights, is unaffected by the fire.

No one was injured and no aircraft was damaged, authorities said.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 10:37 a.m., and the fire was brought under control just after 11 a.m., Jones said.

Jones said the hangar that caught fire was for a smaller aircraft, and about the size of two standard garages. Mester said the hangar was leased by Spring City Aviation, which operates flight lessons at Timmerman Airport, but was old and unused at the time.

The hangar was a total loss from the fire, Mester said. A second empty hangar next to it also was significantly damaged.

Around 12:30 p.m. Sept. 12, Mester said Timmerman Airport is closed, but will reopen later in the afternoon.
