16-year-old charged with shooting another teen in Middletown barbershop

City of Middletown Police have charged a 16-year-old boy with the shooting of a 17-year-old boy in a barbershop on West Main Street.

The shooting happened at approximately 5:15 p.m. Sept. 3 in the barbershop at 6 West Main St. Police said the victim, whose name was not given due to his age, was a new employee at the shop.

Middletown police said that on Sept. 5, detectives from their department, assisted by members of the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center and the FBI Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, and officers from the NYPD’s 30th and 33rd precincts, traveled to New York City to locate a suspect in the shooting.

Following coordinated surveillance efforts in the area where the teen was believed to be located, officers saw him exiting a building and took him into custody without incident.

Police said the 16-year-old boy is a resident of the City of Middletown.

Due to his age and in accordance with juvenile privacy protection laws, police said no further identifying information about him will be released.

He was brought to the Middletown police department, where he was booked and processed, and charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder, a felony.

On Sept. 6, he was arraigned in the Youth Part Court of Middletown City Court before Newburgh City Court Judge Anika Mohammed.

He was sent to a juvenile detention facility in lieu of $200,000 cash bail, $400,000 partially secured bond or $800,000 full bond, pending further court action.

“This crime understandably shocked our community, given the extreme violence and reckless nature of discharging a firearm inside a local business,” Middletown Police Chief John Ewanciw said in a statement.

Police said their investigation into the shooting is continuing. Anyone with additional information is asked to call the City of Middletown Police Department’s detective division at 845-343-3152. All calls will be kept confidential.
