New York Giants' Brian Daboll officially returns play-calling duties to Mike Kafka

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll made it official on Thursday, revealing that assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will be calling the offensive plays this season.

Daboll’s announcement came one day after heaping praise upon Kafka.

“Mike’s done a great job this preseason,” he said on Wednesday. “He’s done a good job with the staff. Got a lot of confidence in Mike and the offensive staff. Up to this point, relative to all the preseason games and the meetings we’ve had, I’ve been very pleased with the offensive staff.”

Kafka called the plays two seasons ago and was stripped of those duties last season. Daboll chose to call the plays himself. The Giants’ offense fared no better under Daboll. This year, he’s taking a less hands-on approach and delegating more authority to his coordinators and coaches.

“I haven’t really had a whole bunch of time to think about that,” Kafka said about what it means to reassume duties. “I’ve just been thinking about the players, thinking about the guys and how we can make them great, thinking about our coaches and the coaching staff and how I can help them and be a servant to them, how we can make this organization better and how I can make our offense better. That’s really been my focus. Then, you know, obviously all hands on deck for Washington this week.”

Kafka called the plays this preseason from the sidelines as opposed to sitting up in the booth, which will continue to start the regular season.

The Giants scored over 30 points in each of their three preseason games.
