Texas A&M’s 42-24 win over UTSA answered several questions about the Aggies’ offense under second-year OC Collin Klein, mainly starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s improvement as a passer, coupled with new wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver’s ability to make an immediate impact in the passing game, and help Reed’s growth in the pocket as the season progresses.
A career day through the air, Reed’s poise, accuracy, and overall confidence proved that the work he put in this offseason has started to pay off after throwing for 289 yards and four touchdowns, including a combined 194 receiving yards and three touchdowns from Concepcion and Craver.
However, one of Reed’s best throws of note came in the first half after throwing a perfectly timed pass in a tight window down the seam to transfer tight end Nate Boerkircher, which several of the Texas A&M writers and I believe proves his confidence, throwing between three defenders in the process.
Thanks to Austin American-Statesman beat writer Tony Catalina for capturing the pass during his annual All-22 review. You clearly see how much Reed’s accuracy and velocity have improved, and credit to Boerkircher for making the impressive grab.
On Monday, coach Mike Elko unsurprisingly praised his quarterback, noting his comfort level in the pocket, especially in the middle of the field.
“I thought he did a nice job. I thought he was comfortable. I thought he was poised.”
“I thought he delivered some really confident balls across the middle on time.”
Last season, the lack of speed, quickness, and separation from the 2024 wide receiver corps resulted in Marcel Reed’s late struggles in key games, but that’s all changed this season with Concepcion, Craver, and tight ends Boerkircher and Amari Niblack now filling out the corps.
