The New York Giants look like a completely different team this summer than they’ve been the past decade. Their offense, which has been among the NFL’s weakest the past few seasons, looks versatile and powerful. They put up 107 points in their three games in the preseason.
Good quarterback play will do that, change an offense from dormant to dynamic overnight. The arrival of rookie Jaxson Dart and veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston just might be the deepest quarterback room in the league right now.
Poor Tommy DeVito, who threw three touchdowns last week in the 42-10 bashing of the New England Patriots, is likely going ot be sent packing.
The points explosion will lead to other pleasant problems. The Giants’ defense will be able to pin their ears back and go after quarterbacks, who will be forced to keep up.
The pass rush just happens to be a strength on this roster. Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence, and Kayvon Thibodeaux will be joined by free agent Chauncey Golston and prized rookie Abdul Carter this year, creating a dream team of pass rushers.
“When you put up points and you go up in the first half, that’s more opportunities to pass rush,” Thobodeaux told reporters on Monday. “So, we’re licking our chops. We’re excited.”
The Giants were 3-14 last season, but eight of their losses were by one score or less. This year, they promise to score more and allow fewer points, which will lead to more victories.
Thibodeaux, the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, believes the Giants’ time is now.
“For the whole team, you know, we’re trying to win the Super Bowl. So, I think from the coaching staff, from the front office all the way down, I think we are all steams ahead on winning the Super Bowl,” he said. “So, super excited, super grateful for the opportunity. We’re just going to keep working, taking it one day, one week, one game at a time.”
That’s a lofty goal but stranger things have happened.
