NY State police say Spring Valley woman used found credit card to make $1,636 in purchases

SLOATSBURG — A 28-year-old Spring Valley woman faces felony charges of going on a shopping spree with another person’s credit card, state police said.

Police accused Raufoliana O. Louis Jean of using a credit card left at the New York State Thruway Authority Service Area to purchase a total of $1,636.18 worth of merchandise in Spring Valley, police said in a news release.

Louis Jean worked at the service area and is accused of taking advantage of a customer who mistakenly left a credit card at the service station off the Thruway.

New York State police investigated a theft complaint at 8:21 p.m., Aug. 11, and arrested Louis Jean the next day. State police didn’t provide details of how investigators focused on Jean Louis. The service area is equipped with surveillance cameras.

State police charged Louis Jean with two felony counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and one felony count of second-degree identity theft.

The grand larceny count covers property valued at more than $1,000, but less than $3,000. The maximum sentence upon conviction at the judge’s discretion is four years in state prison. The identity theft charge with intent to defraud also carries a potential prison sentence of up to four years.

The state police said they released Louis Jean on an appearance ticket returnable to the Sloatsburg Village Court on Aug. 27.
