Now is the time in the NFL when fringe players need to make a name for themselves, either to secure a spot on their current team or to put enough good tape out there to catch on with another. Former Texas A&M star wide receiver Ainias Smith has shown early preseason improvement that’s keeping him penciled in as a possible keep.
On Saturday, Smith logged his second touchdown of the preseason on a route similar to last week’s score against the Bengals. From nine yards out, lined up in the slot, he beat his defender on a slant route for a touchdown that gave the Eagles the lead heading into halftime. He caught both of his targets for 19 yards and added a 10-yard punt return, showcasing his versatility as both a receiver and special teamer.
The Eagles have a talented wide receiver room that currently runs four deep, with Smith battling for one of the final spots. As of now, he has a strong chance to make the 52-man roster. Even if he doesn’t stick in Philly, he’s shown enough to warrant a spot on a team looking for depth at the WR position.
