Cornerback Ethan Robinson was the unlikely hero of the Miami Dolphins’ 24-17 victory over the Detroit Lions.
Or maybe he wasn’t so unlikely to play the role.
Robinson sealed the victory with an athletic interception on the Miami 20-yard line with 22 seconds left. He leaped for the ball and managed to hang onto it when many players might have been content to just bat it down.
But in an archived interview with NFLdraftdiamonds.com, maybe Robinson telegraphed this play. Asked about what stands out on his film, Robinson said this:
“The two things I feel like stand out the most about my film is my ability to play the ball in the air and generate havoc that way, and my ability to tackle.”
The Lions had driven down the field, threatening to tie or even win the game (we all know coach Dan Campbell calls an aggressive game, so why not go for two?). Speaking to Miami’s WTVJ-Channel 4 after being the Lions, Robinson said, “I just got up, tried to make a play. Got my blitz time right, saw the angle of the quarterback’s arm.”
Robinson was joined by a throng of his teammates as he galloped down the field in celebration.
“It felt great with the game on the line,” he said.
