Cleveland Browns vs. Philadelphia Eagles joint practices | Live updates from second day

PHILADELPHIA — It’s time to find out what the second day of joint practices between the Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles will bring.

Can the Cleveland offense find some consistency that was lacking on Day 1, both because of self-inflicted issues and Eagles-inflicted ones? Can the Browns’ defense continue to make life much more difficult on Philadelphia’s Super Bowl Most Valuable Player quarterback Jalen Hurts like it did in the first one?

Where do both teams make the biggest adjustments? And which team brings the additional intensity and aggressiveness that always seems to define the second day of joint practices?

All this and more when the Browns and Eagles get back on the field in steamy South Philadelphia at 10 a.m. Follow along here for updates throughout the day:

Eagles guard Landon Dickerson provides beers for Browns offensive line

The Browns didn’t get the benefit of going against Eagles All-Pro guard Landon Dickerson during the joint practices. Dickerson suffered a meniscus injury a couple days before they occurred.

Dickerson, however, didn’t forget his offensive line brethren from Cleveland. He and right tackle Lane Johnson, who didn’t practice on the second day, provided a cooler of beers to the Browns’ offensive linemen after the practice ended.

“It looked like a Gatorade can to me,” Browns guard Joel Bitonio joked afterwards, but no, it was a nice gesture. The O-linemen suffer together sometimes, so it’s always a bond, even on other teams. We respect each other’s games and stuff, so it was a nice gesture.”

Drops come back at worst time for Cleveland Browns

The Browns had a much better offensive day on the whole on Day 2 than Day 1. That’s partially because they cut down on most of the drops.

Not all, mind you. Just enough to be satisfied with the day.

The drops still showed up, though. Tight end Harold Fannin Jr. had one, as did Brendan Bates.

The one that hurt the most was on the final play of the day. Dillon Gabriel had thrown one of his best passes of the day, a touchdown to Fannin, when his two-point conversion pass to Diontae Johnson went off Johnson’s hands and into the hands of safety Andrew Mukuba for the interception.

Harold Fannin Jr. among Cleveland Browns offensive highlights vs. Eagles

If you’re looking for a player who comes out of the second joint practice among the winners, look no further than tight end Harold Fannin Jr.

The day wasn’t flawless, with the first throw in 11-on-11 in the red zone from Joe Flacco went off Fannin’s hands and shoulder pads for a drop instead of a touchdown. That was about the only bad thing that happened for the Canton McKinley High School product.

Fannin beat Eagles standout cornerback Quinyon Mitchell — bringing the Bowling Green-Toledo rivalry to South Philadelphia — on an out route on the second five-play series for Flacco and the No. 1 offense. It was over the final two 11-on-11 periods that he really took off.

“I think he’s really explosive,” safety Grant Delpit said of his teammate Fannin. “I don’t know how many yards and stuff he had (in college), I think some broke record or something, I don’t know. But he’s doing his thing out there and I just tell him to keep working. Every time I see him I really see it pay dividends. Of course we love our tight ends on this offense, so I think we expect big things from Harold.”

The tight end was involved in a little trickeration when Fannin took a lateral from Flacco to the right. However, he then lateraled back across the field to running back Jerome Ford, who ran it for a big gain.

was one of two plays Fannin was involved with featuring some tickeration. He caught another lateral from Flacco, and this time flipped it to running back Dylan Sampson for a hook-and-lateral score.

Fannin capped the day by catch a well-thrown pass from Dillon Gabriel on a corner route. Fannin went into the end zone for the score, setting off a celebration that included safety Grant Delpit coming over from the other field.

What did Kevin Stefanski say about Shedeur Sanders’ oblique injury?

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski addressed Shedeur Sanders’ oblique injury prior to the Aug. 14 joint practice with the Eagles. He reaffirmed what the team had said the day before, that Sanders was day-to-day and wouldn’t practice against Philadelphia.

“If it’s a right guard, you can play through that,” Stefanski said. “When it’s a quarterback, you kind of need that muscle to throw. So unfortunately we’re going to put him down for a little bit here. We will treat it day to day and see how he responds. But we want to be smart. He’s a thrower so you can’t push that thing.”

Stefanski said Sanders is getting treatment for the injury. The quarterback was also expected on the field during the final practice with the Eagles, just not participating.

As for the Aug. 16 preseason game against the Eagles, Stefanski said that he was going to stick with “unlikely” as Sanders’ status for playing in the game.

Cleveland Browns to be without QB Shedeur Sanders for 2nd joint practice vs. Eagles

Rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders left the first practice after suffering an oblique injury during early throwing. The Browns later announced that it was an oblique strain and that he was day-to-day.

However, Sanders will not practice on the second day against Philadelphia. It’s uncertain about his status for the Aug. 16 preseason game against the Eagles.
