Who will start at quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1? Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones?
ESPN’s Dan Graziano has spent the last couple of weeks, as he put it, checking in with league sources on what they know as it pertains to each quarterback competition, including with the Colts.
Given that information, Graziano then made his prediction.
“Richardson,” wrote Graziano. “I know Jones appears to have taken over the No. 1 spot on the depth chart after Richardson’s spring injury, but training camp is where Richardson looks the best — if he’s healthy, he’s likely to outperform Jones on the practice field.”
Through five training camp practices, each quarterback has had their moments and their struggles. Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan wrote in his latest training camp notebook that he doesn’t give either quarterback an advantage over the other at this time.
However, in two of the team’s last three practices, Richardson has been very solid. This includes on Monday, when the pads were on for the first time.
A priority for Richardson this offseason has been on those short to intermediate routes, and success there begins with proper footwork, which has also been a point of emphasis.
Ultimately, as head coach Shane Stiechen has said, the most consistent of the two will win the starting quarterback job. But, as Graziano mentions, if the battle is close, it’s important to note that the Colts have a lot more invested in Richardson than Jones. Richardson also comes with a much higher ceiling.
