Jacksonville Jaguars' CB Jourdan Lewis weighs in on QB Trevor Lawrence and 2025 season

On a recent appearance on CBS Sports HQ, Jacksonville Jaguars’ cornerback Jourdan Lewis was asked about Trevor Lawrence and what many on the outside are calling an important season for the fifth-year quarterback.

“We just rally around him,” Lewis said. “We understand what football is. Football isn’t just one position. Football is a culmination of guys coming together and achieving a goal. I know coach Liam and Mr. Gladstone, they putting a team around him to be successful.”

A clear priority this offseason for the Jaguars was on making sure there is balance around Lawrence so that he doesn’t have to do it all.

This started with the hiring of Liam Coen, who’s Sean McVay-esque scheme can help with some of the heavy lifting by throwing a variety of looks at opposing defenses, keeping them off balance and guessing, which can then create opportunities for the quarterback to exploit.

GM James Gladstone then reshaped the offensive line and added a lot more competition by making six additions between free agency and the NFL draft. Gladstone also added more speed around Lawrence as well, signing Dyami Brown, along with drafting Travis Hunter and Bhayshul Tuten.

Even the changes made on defense can impact Lawrence and the offense. More turnovers or getting off the field on third downs more often means more scoring chances for the Jaguars’ offense.

When things are going well, the quarterback is often praised, and when things are going poorly, the quarterback often gets the bulk of the blame. It’s just the nature of the position.

However, as Lewis describes, in what is the ultimate team game, the Jaguars’ success will be a group effort. With the changes made this offseason, Lawrence is better positioned to find individual success, and that, of course, is a good thing for the Jaguars’ team as a whole.

“I always talk about complementary football and that’s on both sides of the football from special teams to offense to defense, we all gotta do our collective jobs to make each other’s jobs easier,” Lewis added. “That’s my job. That’s our job, to make his job easier, and the guys around him to make his job easier. I don’t see it as it’s just all on him because this is a football team and we have to all be successful as one.”
