Gov. Kathy Hochul has ordered flags on all New York State government buildings to be flown at half-staff on Thursday, July 10, in honor of West Colesville Fire Chief James Sitek, who died in the line of duty on July 4 while responding to a fire in Conklin.
“Our first responders are admirable — stepping up for our communities in times of need, ensuring all are safe and protected from harm,” Hochul said. “First responders go above and beyond, and I join the West Colesville community, family and loved ones in mourning the loss of their fearless Fire Chief, James Sitek.”
Chief James Sitek: A legacy of service
Sitek, a 35-year veteran of the West Colesville Fire Company, collapsed from an apparent medical emergency while fighting a house fire early on July 4. He was transported to Wilson Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Sitek’s volunteer firefighting career began in Halfmoon, NY, before joining the West Colesville Fire Company in 1990. He rose through the ranks to become chief in 2022 and was widely respected for his humility, leadership, and service.
“Chief Sitek was a mentor, leader, and brother to hundreds of firefighters,” colleagues said. “He will be deeply missed.”
Tributes from across the state
Local fire departments and public officials expressed condolences following the announcement of Sitek’s passing. The Sanitaria Springs Fire Company praised his steady presence at emergencies and training events. The Binghamton Fire Department and Mayor Jared Kraham also offered their support to the West Colesville community.
Hochul called Sitek “one of New York State’s bravest,” adding:
“Broome County is a safer place because of Jim’s selfless service — and we are eternally grateful.”
