A death investigation is underway after police say a Berrien County deputy returned fire at a man, killing him.
Michigan State Police is investigating a June 30 incident, which the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office said began as the officer approached a vehicle on Third Street in Niles Township, leading to the passenger running away and the driver driving south on Third Street.
As the deputy chased the passenger on foot, the suspect pulled out a firearm and discharged it at the deputy, the sheriff’s office said in a June 30 press release. The deputy returned fire at the suspect, killing him, Berrien County police said. The department did not say if the officer was injured after the suspect shot at him.
The names of the suspect and the officer have not been released at this time, police said. The deputy, as per protocol, is on administrative leave while the case is investigated, the sheriff’s office said.
