A 22-year-old motorcycle driver was pronounced dead following a crash on westbound Interstate 94 late Friday, June 27, near Lonyo Street in Detroit, according to police.
The driver, a man from Lakewood, Ohio, attempted to pass a vehicle traveling in the right lane by driving on the right shoulder of westbound I-94. The motorcycle sideswiped the car, according to a preliminary investigation by Michigan State Police.
The driver lost control after striking the car, struck the bridge abutment on the right shoulder, crossed all lanes of traffic and struck the median wall, according to MSP.
There were no other injuries, MSP said. The freeway was closed for the investigation for about three hours around midnight, Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Shaw said.
The social media post said the motorcycle was traveling at “high rates of speed.” Shaw said the exact speed is unknown.
“It is preventable crashes like this one that drives home that excessive speed kills. We want to remind motorcyclists to drive the speed limit, wear protective gear, including a helmet, and obey all traffic laws. It only takes one poor decision to lose your life,” Lt. Mike Shaw said in a news release on X.
Michigan Police said it is honing in on speed enforcement and will be “will be conducting dedicated speed enforcement during the month of July,” according to a news release by Michigan State Police.
A review of crash data from 2019-23 included in a news release by Michigan State Police on Thursday, June 26, showed speed-related crashes have decreased in the state of Michigan.
