CLARKSTOWN – Bad news for commuters who head south on the PIP to pick up the I-87/287 northbound/westbound: the interchange ramp that’s been closed all spring will likely stay blocked through the summer.
The southbound Palisades Interstate Parkway Exit 9W ramp to the northbound New York State Thruway was supposed to reopen June 30.
The closure has been extended until early fall, according to state Department of Transportation spokesman Glenn Blain.
A posted detour loops vehicle around the interchange to head west on I-87/I-287.
PIP-to-Thruway ramp closed for Route 304 fix
The interchange has closed earlier this year amid work to fix up Route 304, which crosses over 87/287 in Clarkstown, at the tail end of the PIP southbound ramp onto the Thruway.
The 304 overpass was originally constructed in 1953. The PIP was being constructed back then; the parkway fully opened in 1958.
The Route 304 work was originally announced in June 2024. Work started in March 2025.
The interchange was due to reopen in early April, but then it was pushed back to June 30.
NYSDOT confirmed on June 26 that the June 30 finish date would not be made.
The rehabilitation work to the Route 304 bridge has proven more extensive than initially expected, Blain said. “NYSDOT is working to re-open the ramp as quickly as possible and appreciates the public’s patience as we undertake this important project.”
