MANITOWOC – Neighbors who reported a garage fire in the 500 block of North Sixth Street Monday afternoon are credited with calling for help.
Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department responded after a 911 call reported smoke and flames coming from the structure at around 4:25 p.m. June 23.
Crews were on scene in just more than two minutes and found a fully involved fire coming from a detached garage.
The department said the initial company on scene quickly deployed a hose line and began to extinguish the fire while additional arriving companies deployed a second line to protect exposures and perform salvage and overhaul. The main fire was extinguished quickly, the department added.
No injuries were reported.
The department said the fire is under investigation, although it appears to have started inside the structure. No dollar amount in damages was immediately available.
“The Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department would like to thank those who contacted dispatch to report the fire,” the department’s battalion chief, Jeremy Wagner, said in a news release. “Neighbors helping neighbors is what makes our community great. They saw something that didn’t look right and made the call.”
Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department was assisted by Two Rivers Fire Department, Branch Fire Department, Manitowoc Police Department, Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch and Manitowoc Public Utilities. Off-duty staff were utilized to backfill the city’s fire and EMS services while crews battled the fire.
