Bethune-Cookman University appoints 8th president in school's 121-year history

Albert Mosley is the Bethune-Cookman University Board of Trustees’ choice to be president.

Mosley starts at Bethune-Cookman on July 7, according to a university news release. He arrives after serving three years as president of Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa.

“It’s an extraordinary honor to be selected as the 8th president of the GREAT Bethune-Cookman University, and to build upon the powerful legacy of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune,” Mosley said in a prepared statement. “I am deeply grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to all that God has in store as I partner with our faculty, staff, students, alums, donors, and community partners in shaping a bold and inspiring future for B-CU.”

Bethune-Cookman, a 121-year-old, historically Black university in Daytona Beach, has been without a permanent president for more than four years. During that time, three interim or acting presidents filled the void left by Brent Chrite as several searches for his replacement failed to produce a consensus candidate.

After the board elected Pete Gamble as its new chair in January, a new search committee headed by Trustee John Crossman was appointed, and the process led to 135 applicants and three finalists.

Trustees voted on June 12.

“Dr. Mosley’s journey – from first-generation college student to nationally respected university president – is a powerful reflection of the transformational impact we strive to deliver at Bethune-Cookman,” Gamble said. “His proven ability to launch forward-thinking academic programs, secure major philanthropic investments, and lead with both vision and integrity made him the clear choice to guide our university in its next chapter.”

Mosley was born and raised in Shuqualak, Mississippi, and became a first-generation college student who earned degrees from Millsaps College, Duke University, Yale University, and the University of Georgia.

As president of Morningside, Mosley “launched innovative academic programs in aviation, cybersecurity, animal science, AI applications, supply chain management, an MBA, and more,” the B-CU release states, while also securing “a record number of seven-figure transformational gifts that have bolstered the institution’s endowment and led to several new capital projects.”
