MILFORD — The village’s new Main Street social district opens June 20, just in time for the official start of summer and sweltering temperatures.
Village visitors can purchase alcoholic beverages from participating businesses and consume them within the boundaries of the clearly marked social district, which extends from Huron Street to Detroit Street and includes Heritage Wheel Park, Center Street Park, the Farmers’ Market, and the greenbelt, boardwalk, and pavilion areas in Central Park.
Out of 12 eligible businesses that serve liquor in the village, seven have applied to be licensed from the state Liquor Control Commission for the social district. The three who have been approved so far and will provide beverages in cups that can be taken from their establishments on June 20 are Coratti’s On Main, 335 N. Main St.; Main St. Grill & Tavern, 327 N. Main St.; and River’s Edge Brewing Co., 125 S. Main St.
Still pending approval as of June 17 are Charlie’s Still on Main, 525 N. Main St.; Novella’s Pizza, 426 N. Main St.; Pettibone, 340 N. Main St.; and Smoke Street Barbecue, 424 N. Main St.
The district is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, and drinks can only be consumed from designated cups provided by participating businesses. No outside drinks are allowed.
The state began allowing social districts in July 2020, and they proved popular even after the pandemic ended. Approximately 150 municipalities in about 60 Michigan counties now operate a social district.
Milford joined the bandwagon in March when the council approved the village’s social district in a 4-1 vote.
