Coroner IDs woman who died in Vanderburgh County wreck

A motorist submitted to a chemical test as part of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office’s investigation into the death of a woman in a two-vehicle wreck Monday afternoon.

Sheriff Noah Robinson said shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday that his office will provide an update on the incident later in the day or on Wednesday. The woman who was killed has been identified as 31-year-old Maria Guetling, whose family posted a GoFundMe appeal on Tuesday to help with expenses. As of just after 3 p.m. CST, the appeal reported having raised $19,065.

The wreck occurred on the 9700 block of St. Joseph Avenue, just north of Wimberg Road. Deputies were dispatched to the scene shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.

They found a gray GMC SUV with significant front-end damage off the west side of the roadway. They also found a white Freightliner box truck overturned and blocking the roadway.

A sheriff’s office news release says preliminary investigation indicated the box truck was traveling north on St. Joseph when it left the right side of the roadway. The driver overcorrected, crossing into the southbound lane and colliding with the GMC SUV driven by Guetling with a child secured in a car seat.

“Tragically, the female driver was pronounced deceased at the scene,” states the news release. “The child sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.”
