Daniel Jones looking to work with Indianapolis Colts' WRs prior to training camp

Following Thursday’s final minicamp practice, the Indianapolis Colts now have summer break until training camp begins on July 22nd. But during those five-ish weeks of off time, quarterback Daniel Jones plans to get together with some of the Colts’ wide receivers.

“I think we’re working through how and when that’s going to happen,” Jones said after Thursday’s practice. “But certainly hope to get together and work.”

Jones doing this is nothing new to the Colts or around the NFL. In fact, it’s common practice. Anthony Richardson did this as well last offseason.

However, with Richardson still recovering from a shoulder injury, which requires rest, he is unable to do any throwing at this time with his receivers. So, as was the case for most of OTAs and all of minicamp, these are more reps that will go to Jones.

As a newcomer, Jones is still in the process of learning the Colts’ offense, but his experience, which includes 69 career starts, can help shorten that learning curve.

Additionally, the extra reps he’s been getting in practice, along with the opportunity to work with the receivers prior to training camp, can also aid in his learning and growth within the offense.

“Obviously, the work on the field is valuable and chemistry, but I think just spending time off the field and hanging out and getting to know guys, building relationships, I think that’s a big component of it,” said Jones.

The quarterback competition hasn’t been decided by any means at this time, but all the additional reps coming Jones’ way is going to potentially give him the upper hand heading into training camp. So far, head coach Shane Steichen has been “very pleased” with what he’s seen from Jones.
