Every day this week, enough people in Florida googled “When is daylight saving time?” for the question to continue cropping up in Google’s day-by-day and hour-by-hour trending searches in Florida.
And although the year is going by quickly, and many stay-at-home parents are likely already wondering when summer will end, it’s only just begun.
Daylight saving time began just three months ago, in March, and won’t end until November. And while the official first day of meteorological summer has come and gone, the official first day of astronomical summer (which is marked by the summer solstice) hasn’t even happened yet.
Here’s a quick refresher on when daylight saving time’s start and end this year and when the first official day of summer is (astronomically speaking).
When is daylight saving time 2025? When does daylight saving time end?
Daylight saving time for 2025 began at 2 a.m. EDT on Sunday, March 9, 2025. It will end when we fall back again at 2 a.m. EST on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025.
When does the sun rise? Does the sun come up later after daylight savings?
The sun rises and sets later in the day during daylight saving time.
The sun rises later in the spring and summer than it does in the fall and winter. When daylight saving time began and we sprung forward from standard time over the weekend, the time of the sunrise and sunset also sprung forward. When we fall back, there is less daylight and the sun rises earlier. When we spring forward, there is more daylight and the sun rises and sets later.
On Sunday, March 9, 2025, the sun rose around 7:45 a.m. EDT instead of around 6:45 a.m. EST, and set around 7:30 p.m. EDT instead of around 6:30 p.m. EST. The exact minute the sun rises or sets depends on where you’re located in the state.
Is it daylight saving or daylight savings?
Many people pluralize the phrase to say “daylight savings time.” The correct way to spell and say it is daylight saving time.
What day is the start of summer? What day does summer technically end?
It depends on what you consider the start of summer. There’s a difference between the astronomical and meteorological first day of summer. And a lot of people in the U.S. see Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial “start of summer,” while those with kids in school might base the turn of the season on when school lets out for summer.
Somewhat like a counterpart to Memorial Day weekend, many in the U.S. see Labor Day weekend as the official “end of summer.” The astronomical end of summer comes with the autumnal equinox in September, and the meteorological end of summer is on August 31.
What day is Labor Day in 2025?
Labor Day 2025 will fall on Monday, Sept. 1.
What day does summer technically start, end? Difference between meteorological and astronomical seasons
Astronomical seasons are marked by equinoxes and solstices, which relate to the position of the earth. Meteorological seasons are based on annual temperature patterns and cycles, which is why each season has both an astronomical and meteorological first day.
“Astronomical seasons are based on the position of the Earth in relation to the sun, whereas meteorological seasons are based on the annual temperature cycle,” NOAA says.
“The Earth’s annual trip around the sun forms the basis for the astronomical calendar in which seasons are defined by two solstices and two equinoxes.”
According to Accuweather, meteorological summer is exactly three months long. It began on June 1 and lasts through August 31 every year. This year, the meteorological start of the summer landed on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
The astronomical start of summer – which is marked by the summer solstice each year – is still yet to come, falling on Friday, June 20.
