The Spanish colonial-styled Corpus Christi Cathedral — a landmark that sits atop North Upper Broadway — will undergo its first major renovation in 40 years, church leadership said May 30.
The Rev. James Stembler, current rector of the cathedral, was joined by former Corpus Christi Cathedral rectors in making the announcement.
Included among a lengthy list of described interior updates, beautification and accessibility improvements are new mosaic flooring, new pews, a new shrine to all saints, new baptismal font and altar, as well as a new sound system and lighting.
The renovation is anticipated to be complete in late 2025 or early 2026, Stembler said.
The Corpus Christi Cathedral is the most recent structure of what was originally St. Patrick’s Parrish, established in 1853 as the city’s first Catholic Church, a historical marker on the grounds shows.
“The potential here at the cathedral is huge,” Stembler said. “And I think God has something wonderful in store for us.”
