There are several excellent coffee shops in downtown areas, including Black Iron Coffee Roasters, Good Sense Coffee Company (which replaced the much-beloved Uptown Coffee after ownership announced the business’ impending closure in 2024), and Good Deeds Coffee, not to mention bigger brands like Biggby Coffee and Dunkin’ Donuts — but what’s your go-to spot?

According to our readers at The Daily, the correct answer is Black Iron Coffee Roasters at 119 W. Grand River Ave. in Howell, which received 35.41% of the vote in our weekly poll. Kevin Ridge planned to close the fan-favorite shop in December 2023, but locals Jason and Teresa Koch agreed to invest and have since purchased the business.

Black Iron specializes in hand-roasted artisan craft coffee, sourcing small batches of beans from farms and co-ops around the world and experimenting with special blends.

Good Deeds Coffee at 115 E. Grand River Ave. came in second place, earning 14.35% of the vote. The business celebrated its brick-and-mortar opening in 2023. The menu includes roasted coffee, single origin pour-overs, nitro-infused energy drinks and signature teas.

Biggby Coffee at 1485 N. Michigan Ave. came in third place with 11.96% of the vote, beating out several local brands.
