Who were the top finishers in the SIAC and PAC girls track & field championships Tuesday?

EVANSVILLE — The IHSAA track & field state tournament is right around the corner. But first, it’s conference season.

Castle defended its Southern Indiana Athletic Conference title with a tense victory over Jasper in the girls championship on Tuesday, May 13 at Central High School. The Knights only won two individual events (Elsie Krodel in pole vault and Megan Cleveland in shot put) but was the runner-up in seven others.

The Wildcats were originally announced as the team champion, but a scoring error was found in the 400-meter race. It resulted in the following margin: Castle 128, Jasper 125. The Knights would have lost by two points had the error not be corrected.

The star of the evening was De’Janay Layne of North. The junior speedster was the SIAC champion in the 100-meter dash (12.01 seconds) and 200-meter dash (24.98). The former was a new meet record after the previous mark stood since 1981. Monica Lorey of Jasper was the other individual double winner with victories in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run.

Gibson Southern won the Pocket Athletic Conference by a slim 85-83 margin over Tell City at Princeton High School. The Titans were victors in three individual events: Paige Schnaus in the high jump, Emma Fuhs in the 300-meter hurdles and Ashlyn Hopf in the discus.

Ava Kelley of Boonville (100 and 200), Maddie Graber of Southridge (1,600 and 3,200) and Riley Hinson of Forest Park (400 and pole vault) were the individual double winners. Kelley set a new PAC meet record with a victory in the 100 at 12.28 seconds.
